January!

The Rose Bowl parade, football games, and here in San Bernardino it's my favorite month. Most of the month has some of the clearest air of the year. This month's picture was taken the other day, near my home on top of Little Mountain looking across the valley at the mountains. From year to year you never know if it's going to be a hot January or a cold one. So far this year it's a cold one. We had snow at my house last week; a rare sighting, and it snowed heavily for a couple of hours. The daytime high has been in the 40's. This morning as I am writing this it's 29 degrees. I know 29 degrees, and even 40, would be down right warm for many of you, but for those of us who live in Southern California, 29 degrees is way too cold. In fact you could say it's FREEZING!

With the clear, crisp air, and visability for miles, January promotes the feeling of a New Year, a new beginning. We look back at the prior year to see what we did right, and what we did that we could have done better. It's a great time to work on your goals for the year.

I am really looking forward to this year of 2007. It seems a short time ago everyone was worried about computer crashes for year 2000. If time keeps speeding up as I get older, I really need to kick myself into gear to get everything done! New Year's Resolutions..., you know what I am talking about. “I am going to lose weight.” “I am going to exercise more.” “I am going to share Shaklee with more people.” I have made my resolutions like so many others, but I am making resolutions into goals.

What's the difference? Well..... A resolution is something you say you want to do, but make no commitment of time or activities. Goals have a date, and a quantitative measurement.

So “I will lose weight this year” becomes “I will lose 15 pounds by April 1st.” It is important to both write the goals down and to state what the plan is… “I will lose 15 pounds by April 1st by sticking with the Cinch plan and walking on the treadmill for 20 minutes 4 nights a week.”

The last six months of 2006, I spent learning Shaklee and how to be a Shaklee business leader.

I made some "oops"', but I resolve not to make them again. The good news is that I have all of 2007 to be creative and come up with new mistakes to make.

One of my goals in 2007 is to help two people reach their goal of becoming a Director. One by May the other by August. The plan?? I will be working with my folks to develop strategies to sponsor many more members, and learning techniques to pass on to members who want to build a business.

Who wants to be a Director by May? Along with the Directors, I look forward to helping 6 people reach the level of Associate. At the Associates level your base bonus goes to 12% (up from 4% as a distributor). If you are on the full Cinch plan and get 4 others on the path to better health with Cinch, just add a few cleaning products and you will be an Associate. Your bonus will pay for most if not all of your own products. This is great for members who don't want to build a business, but want to get their own products free. Helping others achieve better health is a nice bonus as well.

I went to one of the 2007 Kick Off meetings, did anyone else make it? The meeting was hosted by Leon & Shirley Pemberton (Master Coordinators). The meeting was held at the Marriott Hotel in Fullerton. We had a nice meeting room with a standing room only crowd. I have to say we felt like the 'kids' in the room. They showed the DVD provided by Shaklee with a message from Roger about his vision for Shaklee. It's really great to be working with a company that doesn't put the importance of money in front of people. Shaklee has been putting in solar arrays in Kenya's villages to provide power for the first time. This is so they don't have to keep cutting down trees for fuel and light. Shaklee is committed to planting 1,000,000 trees in Kenya and the US.

Roger isn't doing this because he is making a profit. He is doing it because it's the right thing to do.

It's a bit different than how most companies do business. Roger wants to double the size of Shaklee in five years. In order to do that, Shaklee has to grow 15% each year for the next five years. I am working on doing much more than 15%, but I am starting with very small numbers, so it doesn't take much to make a big percentage change. What about you? What will you do to help grow Shaklee by 15% in 2007?

My Parents knew Mary Loomis for over 36 years. Here is their memory message.

This month Sandy and I remember and share our love for an inspiring lady, who helped us and literally hundreds of others in both Shaklee and in life.

Mary Loomis, our upline Master Coordinator passed away in December. When we joined Shaklee 36 years ago in San Diego, Mary was our coordinator - the career plan was different at that time and she had 4 first level supervisors (Directors). Mary and Gary lived in Beverly Hills, but with quarterly meetings at her home and her monthly meetings in San Diego we saw her quite frequently. Mary would be uncomfortable with a eulogy. But, she wouldn't mind our sharing lessons learned that can help others. We honestly do not have space to list all that we learned, but here are four of Mary gems.

Inspiration - First, we inspire others by setting a good example, by focusing on their needs, by recognizing their accomplishments, by helping them set and achieve their goals, and by sharing information. Inspiration is generated quietly and transmitted with love and respect. Success - Shaklee success comes with love and under-standing the business.

Mary loved and lived the Shaklee philosophy. She loved the products and her downline. She knew how to build a strong multilevel organization by focusing on helping others. Goals were important tools in building a business; and, we'll always remember Mary's reminder that a goal always has a target date.

If Sandy or I said that we would become coordinators, she would immediately ask when it will happen. Even in the early years when we were supervisors and not growing rapidly, we could count on her periodic phone calls to see how we were doing and to lend encouragement; but never criticism or pressure.

The carrot is much better than the stick. We enjoyed many of Mary & Gary's incentives, for example trips to Hawaii. These incentives always required us to grow in our business. As recipients, we felt satisfaction in our growth and recognition in the incentive they earned. Mary never condemned or criticized if we didn't reach a goal; she always simply expressed confidence in our ability and offered another carrot in the future.

Be a thermostat and not a thermometer. Mary maintained a consistent and reassuring calm, and she transmitted confidence even if something seemed to be going wrong. Brush fires were no cause for panic. Instead, she kept people focused on the big goal rather than on reacting to momentary challenges along the way.

Sandy and I summarize our life lessons from Mary as follows. Live an ethical and principled life. Love what you do, and in Shaklee love your people. Set goals (that are referenced to a specific time) and use your creative powers and self discipline to get there. Finally, do good things for the sake of doing good things and good things will happen. We thank you, Mary for your love, your help and for the example that you set.

If any of you wish to honor Mary, you may plant trees in her name at www.opastuff.org.

Starting to Build a Business

Your Plan of Action:

So, you have been thinking about earning some extra money, but not sure what concrete steps you can take to get started?

1) DREAM Write down your 'why' for joining Shaklee. Consider what you'd like your ideal future to be and create your personal vision of success for you and your Shaklee business.
2) COMMIT Start your personal wellness program today. Shakleeize your home, and invest in your business.
3) LIST Create a starter list of people you know that you would like to share Shaklee with.
4) INVITE Contact your possible partners and invite them to learn about the Shaklee Opportunity.
5) SHARE Share your personal story and enthusiasm for the Shaklee lifestyle. Shaklee has lots of tools that make it easy to share.
6) SPONSOR Bring partners into your business by simply helping them take the same steps you took.
7) TEACH Teach others to take these same simple steps toward realizing their own personal dreams. Use yourself as an example. Encourage them to join and enjoy the Shaklee lifestyle just as you have.

Thats it! Just seven little things. Ok, some are not so little, but as you know, if you take a task that seems too big or hard to do, and you break that task down to it parts, you'll find the parts aren't so hard. If you do the small parts, you end up completing the big task.

If you need help breaking down one of the tasks let me know. We will work on it together.
